Crowns & Bridges
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance after damage or a large filling. A bridge uses crowns on the teeth next to a gap to hold a replacement tooth in place, closing the space left by a missing tooth. Both are common, well-established treatments used across dentistry, not just at our clinic.
Who needs a crown or bridge
You may be advised a crown if a tooth has a large cavity, a fracture, has undergone root canal treatment, or is badly worn and needs more support than a filling can give. A bridge is usually suggested when one or more teeth are missing and you want a fixed option (rather than a removable denture or an implant) that restores chewing and speech and stops neighbouring teeth from shifting.
What happens visit by visit
- First visit (assessment): The dentist examines the tooth, may take an X-ray, and discusses whether a crown, bridge, or another treatment suits your case. Any decay or infection is treated first if needed.
- Preparation visit: The tooth (or teeth, for a bridge) is gently shaped to make room for the crown, an impression or digital scan is taken, and a temporary crown or bridge is fitted so you can eat and speak comfortably while the final piece is made.
- Fitting visit: Once the permanent crown or bridge is ready, it is checked for fit, bite, and appearance, adjusted if needed, and then cemented in place.
- Follow-up: A short review visit may be suggested to make sure the bite feels right and there is no discomfort.
The number of visits can vary slightly depending on how the tooth responds and whether any additional treatment, such as a root canal, is needed first.
What changes the cost from case to case
Several factors affect the cost of a crown or bridge, including the material used (such as metal, ceramic, or zirconia), the number of teeth involved, the condition of the underlying tooth, and whether any prior treatment is needed before the crown or bridge can be placed. Because of this, we do not quote a single figure here. Our price list page shows our starting prices, and after an examination we can give you a clear, personalised estimate.
Aftercare
- Brush and floss as usual, being gentle around the gum line near the crown or bridge.
- Avoid biting very hard foods like ice or hard candy directly on the restored tooth.
- If you grind your teeth at night, mention this, as a night guard may be recommended to protect the crown.
- Keep up with regular check-ups so the fit and surrounding gum health can be monitored.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a crown or bridge last?
With good care, most crowns and bridges last many years, though this varies by material, bite forces, and oral hygiene. Regular check-ups help catch wear early.
Will getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed before any shaping is done, so the procedure itself is not painful. Mild sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and usually settles on its own.
Can I eat normally with a temporary crown?
It is best to avoid sticky or very hard foods and to chew on the other side where possible, since temporary crowns are not as strong as the final restoration.
What does a crown or bridge cost?
This depends on the material chosen, the number of teeth involved, and the condition of the tooth or teeth underneath. Our price list page lists our starting prices, and we can give you an exact estimate after an examination.
Is a bridge better than an implant for a missing tooth?
Both are valid options and the right choice depends on the gap size, the health of neighbouring teeth, bone levels, and your preference. We can talk through the pros and cons for your specific case at a visit.
